The Ogun State Police Command revealed that a 37-year-old woman named Bilikisu Kazeem lost her life during a confrontation between law enforcement officers and kidnappers on Friday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The incident resulted in the successful rescue of nine hostages who had been taken by the kidnappers. The confrontation took place as kidnappers abducted several travelers, including Philip Aivoji, the Lagos State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on the aforementioned expressway.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Command, Omolola Odutola, shared this information in a statement provided to journalists in Abeokuta on Saturday. The statement highlighted that the police intervention led to the liberation of nine out of ten hostages, with only the PDP chairman remaining in captivity.
According to Odutola, a White Mazda Bus with registration LSR 288 XE sustained minor damage during the incident. Additionally, individuals named Eunice Afolake Osalusi, Erinfolami Samuel, Obafemi Da Altantra, and Adeyinka Mathew suffered non-life-threatening gunshot injuries during their attempts to escape but are now recovering in stable condition in the hospital.
Regrettably, Bilikisu Kazeem, aged 37, succumbed to her injuries before reaching the hospital. Her relatives, who were transporting her to the hospital, declined any autopsy examination by the police, and her remains were promptly collected by them.
Odutola further detailed the recovery of exhibits from the scene, including an AK47 magazine containing 28 live ammunition believed to belong to the criminals, as well as handsets and a car key.
The police spokesperson emphasized that the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations has mobilized tactical commanders for joint operations with other security agencies to ensure the safe and unharmed rescue of the PDP chairman.
