The Rivers State Police Command has taken into custody and publicly presented Favour Nweke, the woman who doused her husband, Ekelediri Nwokekoro, with scalding groundnut oil during a domestic dispute.
During her public statement at the police headquarters on Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, Favour Nweke confessed to the distressing incident. She explained that her husband had been displaying unusual behavior recently, which she believed was related to his involvement in a criminal act with some friends.
According to Nweke, the altercation started when she confronted her husband about his erratic behavior and his alleged participation in a criminal activity. She recounted the sequence of events, stating, “He would leave the house around 2 o’clock in the middle of the night and return early in the morning. Sometimes, he would be away for two or three days before coming back. So, I asked him where he was going at odd hours. Then, one of his friends called me and informed me about the situation. He told me that my husband and some individuals were involved in an illegal activity. They had called someone from Abuja to work in Etche, promising a contract and duped them of 20 million naira.”
“I was hearing this for the first time,” she continued. “I realized that this might be the reason for his strange behavior and his plans to travel to another African country. So, when he returned, I confronted him about what I had heard, but he denied it, and we had an argument. I asked him what he did with his share of the money because I heard that others had bought land. He hit me during our argument, and in a fit of anger, I ran to the kitchen and poured hot oil on him. That’s how it happened.
