World Water Day is a yearly United Nations (UN) observance day held on 22 March.
The day is set aside to highlight the importance of freshwater.
It is also used to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.
The theme for this year, 2022 is: “Groundwater, making the invisible visible.”
The theme of each day focuses on topics relevant to clean water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), which is in line with the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 6.
The UN World Water Development Report (WWDR) is released each year around World Water Day.
The first World Water Day, designated by the United Nations, was in 1993.
The idea of International Water Day started in 1992, the year in which the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro took place. That same year, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution by which 22 March of each year was declared world day for water, to be observed starting in 1993.
