Wrong identity! Fresh graduate killed in Otukpo mistaken identity attack

A young graduate of the University of Calabar, identified as Micheal, has been gruesomely killed in Otukpo, Benue State, in what has been described as a case of mistaken identity.

The heartbreaking revelation was made by social activist Meddy Olotu, who narrated how the tragic incident unfolded on Monday night in the Ojira area of Otukpo.

According to Olotu, Micheal had just returned home last week after completing his university education, hoping to rest before proceeding for his National Youth Service.

He was reportedly sitting in front of his mother’s shop when a group of young men attacked him with machetes.

“He was screaming and begging for help, even offering them money for his life,” Olotu recounted. “But they didn’t stop. They just wanted to kill him.”

Witnesses said Micheal was left in a pool of blood and later died from the brutal injuries he sustained.

Sources claim there had been an agreement among various rival cult groups — known locally as “colors” — to maintain peace in the area. The attack has therefore raised questions about what went wrong.

Olotu further revealed that investigations suggest Micheal was not a member of any cult group, but was tragically targeted due to mistaken identity.

Meanwhile, local authorities confirmed that some of the suspects, including two wheelbarrow pushers from Otukpo Main Market, have been arrested in connection with the killing.

The victim has since been laid to rest, leaving the community in deep grief.

“He just graduated and came home to rest,” Olotu lamented. “Now he’s resting in a coffin — all because of mistaken identity.”
