The Niger State Police Command paraded a vigilante named Yahaya Mohammed on Monday, alleging his involvement in the killing of a commercial motorcyclist and the subsequent robbery of the victim’s motorcycle.
Yahaya Mohammed was one of 37 suspects paraded by the police, all of whom are alleged to have engaged in various criminal activities within the state.
According to the command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Wasiu, investigations are currently underway to uncover the full details of their alleged crimes before taking legal action.
The incident began when the police received a report of a lifeless body with a slit throat found in the Shabalile area of Mokwa. Police operatives, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Mokwa Division, swiftly responded, recovering the body and transporting it to a morgue.
Further investigations revealed that on October 2, 2023, at approximately 11:30 a.m., a Bajaj motorcycle believed to have been taken from the deceased was discovered in an unfinished building in Mokwa. This discovery led to the apprehension of a 20-year-old suspect, Usman Yahaya Muhammed, hailing from Kinboku-Kudu village in Mokwa.
During questioning, the suspect reportedly confessed to the crime, stating that he had boarded the motorcycle to Eppa village. However, while en route, he halted the rider and fatally attacked him with a machete.
After the gruesome act, he left the victim’s body behind and made off with the motorcycle. The case is currently being investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna.
The spokesperson confirmed that the suspect would be charged with culpable homicide once the investigation is completed. Mohammed, the suspect, admitted to the crime and expressed regret during an interview with reporters, stating that he didn’t understand why he had committed the act and that he had feared for his own life.
