Zamfara ambush: Bandits kill 7 soldiers and 20 vigilantes

Armed bandits launched a surprise attack on security personnel and vigilante groups in Zamfara state, resulting in the loss of seven Nigerian soldiers, including an officer, a police officer, and 20 vigilant members. The incident occurred during foot patrols aimed at eradicating bandit camps and hideouts within the state.

According to Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, the bandits ambushed troops from Sector 1 FOB Kango during a routine foot patrol on July 24, 2023. However, the troops showed great courage, repelling the attack and inflicting casualties on the bandits.

Regrettably, the brave security personnel and vigilantes suffered casualties in the process. The fallen heroes include one officer, five soldiers, one NPF personnel (Nigerian Police Force), and the 20 vigilantes who joined forces to repel the bandit attack.

The bodies of the deceased have been respectfully taken to Yerima Bakura Specialist Hospital Gusau in Zamfara State. To ensure sensitivity, specific details of the fallen individuals are being withheld until proper administrative procedures are completed to inform their families.

Amid the tragedy, two soldiers are currently reported missing in action, prompting an ongoing search and rescue operation.

Following the bandits’ threats of reprisal due to the heavy casualties they suffered, security has been reinforced at FOB Kango. The brave troops remain resolute and are preparing for further offensives against the bandits to ensure the safety and security of the region.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and colleagues of the fallen soldiers and vigilantes during this difficult time. The nation mourns the loss of these brave souls who made the ultimate sacrifice in their fight against banditry.
