Zulum begins construction of Northern Nigeria’s first intra-city rail project

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has unveiled plans to establish an intra-city rail network connecting Maiduguri and its surrounding areas.

This ambitious project marks the first of its kind among Nigeria’s 19 northern states.

The initial phase will feature 12 strategically located terminals across Maiduguri, linking key markets, schools, public spaces, and economically significant areas. The project aims to boost passenger and cargo transport, stimulate economic activities, and enhance access to various parts of the state.

During an inspection of the proposed rail terminals and routes with Eighteenth Engineering Company (EEC), Borno’s Commissioner for Transport and Energy, Aliyu Mohammed Bamanga, highlighted ongoing feasibility studies, environmental risk assessments, and community engagement to ensure the project’s success.

Once completed, the rail network will provide a cost-effective, energy-efficient, and eco-friendly transportation alternative. It will complement other major infrastructure initiatives, including the 113-kilometre Maiduguri East, West, and South ring road expansions, connecting communities such as Auno, Molai, Polo, and Shagari low-cost estates.

Previously, Zulum’s administration introduced subsidized electric and gas-powered taxis and buses to alleviate rising transport and living costs following fuel subsidy removal. The governor has also prioritized urban and rural infrastructure development as part of broader efforts to rebuild and revitalize Borno after over a decade of insurgency, aiming to restore peace and economic prosperity.
