The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 19-year-old suspect, Chimaobi Mbonu, in connection with the kidnapping and murder of one George Onwurah in Ndiukwuenu village, Orumba North Local Government Area.

Police spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that Mbonu was apprehended by operatives attached to the Awgbu Divisional Headquarters on June 12, 2025, around 10:20 a.m., following credible intelligence and support from the local community.

According to Ikenga, the suspect, alongside accomplices who are still at large, allegedly abducted Onwurah in May 2024, tortured him, and ultimately killed him, even after collecting ransom from the victim’s family.

“Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect and his gang members kidnapped and tortured their victim to death despite receiving ransom. They are also linked to the vandalism of the Community Health Care Centre in the area, where electrical components and other valuables were stolen,” Ikenga stated.

He further noted that the police have launched manhunt operations to apprehend the remaining members of the gang who are currently on the run.

The arrest underscores the command’s renewed commitment to fighting violent crimes and restoring safety in rural communities across the state.
