2023 Women’s AfroBasket: D’Tigress defeat DR Congo in Group opener
The African champions, Nigeria’s D’Tigress, commenced their title defense on a high note with a commanding win against Democratic Republic of Congo in the opening match of the 2023 FIFA Women’s AfroBasket on Friday.
In the 28th edition of the prestigious tournament held in Kigali, Rwanda, D’Tigress displayed their dominance, overpowering DR Congo with a final scoreline of 69-35 in Group D.
The Nigerian women’s team exhibited their prowess throughout the game, excelling in all four quarters. They secured a strong start, claiming the first quarter with a score of 16-8. Continuing their impressive performance, they edged the second quarter 13-10, maintained their momentum in the third with a scoreline of 17-14, and ultimately sealed the victory with an emphatic 23-3 triumph in the fourth quarter.
D’Tigress is set to face Egypt in their final group stage match, scheduled for Monday, July 31. The team is determined to carry forward their winning momentum and secure a spot in the knockout stages of the tournament.
Having won the last three editions of the FIBA women’s AfroBasket, Nigeria is considered one of the top contenders for the title. The team has an illustrious history in the competition, having secured the championship trophy five times, placing them second on the all-time winners’ list behind Senegal, who boast an impressive 11 titles.
The 2023 edition of the FIBA women’s AfroBasket will run from July 28 to August 6, showcasing top basketball talent from across the African continent in an intense battle for glory.
