2023 WWC: Australia’s captain, Sam Kerr ruled out due to injury
Australia captain, Sam Kerr, has been ruled out of their upcoming Group B clash against the Super Falcons of Nigeria in the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
The Chelsea forward was absent during the Matildas’ hard-fought 1-0 victory against Republic of Ireland on Thursday, as she sustained a calf injury during training. Unfortunately, Kerr’s injury will also keep her out of the pivotal encounter against the Super Falcons, adding to the challenges faced by the co-hosts in their quest for glory.
The much-anticipated match against the former African champions is scheduled to take place at the Brisbane Stadium on Thursday, July 27. Without their captain and top goal-scorer, the Matildas will need to dig deep to secure a positive result against a formidable Nigerian side.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media ahead of Australia’s clash with Republic of Ireland, Kerr expressed her disappointment at not being able to take the field but remained focused on the team’s ultimate objective. She assured fans that her absence would not deter the team from striving for success in the tournament.
As Australia prepares to face the Super Falcons, the absence of their talismanic captain will undoubtedly be felt. However, the team remains determined to perform at their best and overcome the challenges presented by Kerr’s injury. All eyes will be on her progress and potential return for Australia’s final group game against Olympic champions Canada on July 31.
