Super Falcons forward Ifeoma Onumonu retires from professional football
Super Falcons striker Ifeoma Onumonu has announced her retirement from professional football, drawing the curtain on a distinguished career that lasted more than a decade.
The 31-year-old forward revealed her decision on Saturday through a heartfelt post on Instagram, where she expressed gratitude for the opportunities and experiences the sport gave her.
“It is with a heart full of gratitude that I bid farewell to my playing career on the pitch,” she wrote. “Football has given me friendships, lessons, and memories that I will treasure forever.”
Born in the United States, Onumonu began her career in the American league system and represented the U.S. U-23 women’s national team before opting to play for Nigeria, a decision that transformed her career and won her admiration from fans across Africa.
She made her Super Falcons debut in 2021 and quickly established herself as an important player in the squad. Her biggest international highlight came in 2024 when she helped Nigeria clinch the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON, title.
At club level, Onumonu represented several teams in the U.S., most notably Gotham FC, before concluding her professional journey with French side Montpellier HSC.
Known for her pace, technical quality, and sharp eye for goal, she earned a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most dependable forwards. Teammates and supporters have since paid glowing tributes to her career, praising her professionalism and passion.
Onumonu stressed her desire to remain connected to the game while inspiring the next generation of female footballers.
“Football will always be part of my life. I may be leaving the field as a player, but my love for the game remains as strong as ever,” she said.
