2026 WCQ: Messi nets brace as Argentina beat Peru 2-0

Inter Miami forward, Lionel Messi showcased his scoring prowess by netting two goals, securing a 2-0 victory for Argentina against Peru in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier held on Wednesday, October 18 at the Estadio Nacional de Lima.

In the third minute of the match, Messi attempted a long-range shot narrowly missing the left side of the post.

However, in the 32nd minute, he opened the scoring with his signature looped shot following a well-timed assist from Nicolas Gonzalez.

Taking charge once again, Messi doubled Argentina’s lead 10 minutes later, skillfully placing the ball past the Peruvian goalkeeper. Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez played a crucial role in assisting the second goal.

This match marked Messi’s first start after recovering from an injury.

The 36-year-old football maestro is on track to potentially win an eighth Ballon d’Or, extending his record, with the awards ceremony set to take place on October 30 at the Theater du Chatelet.

Messi has had an impressive season with Inter Miami, boasting 11 goals and five assists in 13 games across all competitions.

With a remarkable tally of 106 goals in 178 games for Argentina, Messi continues to be a pivotal force for his national team. Argentina currently leads the CONMEBOL qualifying series, boasting 12 points from four games.
