Ghana sacks Hughton after Black Stars’ disgraceful AFCON exit
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has removed Chris Hughton from his position as the head coach of the senior National team, the Black Stars, “with immediate effect.”
“The Executive Council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars,” stated the FA in an official release.
The decision comes in the wake of the Black Stars’ disappointing performance and subsequent elimination from the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
In a dramatic turn of events on Tuesday, Cameroon secured a 3-2 victory over Gambia, knocking Ghana out of the tournament.
Hughton’s tenure faced heightened scrutiny after a 2026 World Cup qualifying loss to the Comoros last November. The pressure further intensified following a defeat to Cape Verde in the opening group match in Ivory Coast. Despite a promising draw against Egypt, hopes were dashed with another draw against Mozambique, ultimately sealing Ghana’s exit from the competition.
“The Ghana Football Association will, in the coming days, provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars,” the statement added.
