As part of the events scheduled to mark the beginning of the 2024/2025 legal year at the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, will administer the oath of office to 87 newly appointed Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) on Monday in the main courtroom of the court.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Festus Akande, on Friday. The statement noted that the CJN will also deliver a State of the Judiciary address, reviewing the performance of the Supreme Court and the Nigerian judiciary during the 2023/2024 legal year.

In addition, key stakeholders in the justice sector, including the Attorney General of the Federation, the Chairman of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN), and the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), are expected to give speeches on the state of the country’s justice system.

The Supreme Court had embarked on its annual vacation on July 22, 2024, and while the court resumed sitting on September 23, 2024, the formal new legal year ceremony will be held in line with its long-standing tradition.

The programme for the official commencement of the new legal year will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Supreme Court’s main courtroom, the statement added.
