Edo Queens fell to a heartbreaking 3-1 loss against DR Congo’s TP Mazembe in the first semi-final of the CAF Women’s Champions League on Tuesday.

Despite taking a 1-0 lead, the Nigerian champions conceded a late equalizer in the 90th minute, forcing the match into extra time, where TP Mazembe capitalized to secure their place in the final.

Following a goalless first half, Peace Essien struck in the 65th minute to put Edo Queens ahead. However, the lead was short-lived as Merveille Kanjinga leveled the score for TP Mazembe just before regulation time ended.

Extra time proved decisive as Comfort Folorunsho’s own goal in the 101st minute handed TP Mazembe a 2-1 advantage. Marlene Kasaj then sealed the win with a penalty in the dying moments of the first half of extra time.

Edo Queens will now compete in the third-place playoff on November 22 against the loser of the other semi-final clash between AS FAR of Morocco and Egypt’s FC Masar.

The Nigerian side had previously shown resilience in the tournament, scoring twice in stoppage time to stun defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in their final Group B game.
