The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly condemned the abduction of four female students from Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, by unidentified gunmen.

In a statement by its National Public Relations Officer, Amb. Mimidoo Joy Gundu, NANS described the incident as a glaring failure of Nigeria’s security system, leaving students vulnerable to such attacks.

The association called on the Federal Government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to take swift and decisive action to ensure the safety of students nationwide.

NANS also urged security agencies, including the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, and the Defense Headquarters, to intensify efforts to rescue the victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“We strongly condemn this senseless act of violence and demand urgent intervention from the Federal Government to guarantee the safety of students across Nigerian campuses,” Gundu stated.

She stressed that security agencies must work tirelessly to secure the release of the abducted students and ensure justice is served.

“The abduction of our students is a wake-up call for the government to take concrete measures in addressing the nation’s security challenges,” she added.

“We charge the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, and the Defense Headquarters and other security chiefs to work tirelessly to ensure the safe return of our abducted students.

“We demand that they leave no stone unturned in their efforts to rescue our students and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“The abduction of our students is a wake-up call to the Federal Government to take concrete steps to address the security challenges facing our nation. We demand that the government takes immediate action to: Provide adequate security personnel and infrastructure to protect our campuses from attacks.

“Conduct thorough investigations into the abduction of our students and prosecute those found culpable.

“Offer counseling and support services to the families of the abducted students and ensure their safe return.
“We urge all Nigerian students to remain calm but vigilant, and to demand that their rights to safety and security are respected. We will continue to monitor the situation and take all necessary actions to ensure the safe return of our student.”
