Insecurity: Kogi Govt bans all public, religious gatherings
Authorities in Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State have announced a dusk-to-dawn curfew amid rising security threats within the council.
The restriction, which takes effect from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., began on December 2 and will remain in force until further notice. In addition, round-the-clock security surveillance and patrols have been deployed across all communities in the area.
Announcing the measure in a statement, the Chairman of Omala LGA, Edibo Peter Mark, described the action as part of emergency steps aimed at safeguarding lives and property.
To strengthen the security arrangement, Mark ordered security operatives to intensify checks at all entry and exit points, directing that strict stop-and-search operations be carried out with the full involvement of the Joint Task Force.
The council also imposed restrictions on religious and social activities. According to the chairman, all public gatherings, including Moulud celebrations, Christian vigils and similar events, have been suspended indefinitely.
He further disclosed that the use of fireworks during festivals has been banned, while churches and mosques have been instructed to limit the duration of their worship sessions.
“Sunday services and mosque prayers must be conducted briefly and closed promptly,” he stated.
Mark urged residents to comply fully with the new measures and to cooperate with security agencies, stressing that collective support is essential for the restoration of peace across the local government area.
