Suspected gunmen kill retired soldier in Benue

A retired military officer has been killed in Benue State after coming under attack by suspected armed bandits.

Details of the incident were made public on Monday via a post on X by security analyst, Zagazola Makama.

According to the report, the fatal shooting occurred on Sunday at about 5:00 p.m. at Anem Village, located in Ikyurav-Ya area of Kwande Local Government Area.

The deceased was identified as Sergeant Chiayongo Jem’m (rtd), who was said to have been specifically targeted by the assailants.

Makama disclosed that the victim’s remains were evacuated by family members and deposited at an undisclosed mortuary in Ikyogen.

In response to the killing, the Divisional Police Officer in Jato-Aka reportedly deployed a joint security patrol to the community to pursue the attackers.

Security operatives are said to be combing surrounding bushes in an effort to apprehend the suspects, while the State Criminal Investigation Department has assumed responsibility for the investigation.
