Six feared dead after Toyota, Sharon buses collide in Benue
At least six persons have been confirmed dead, while several others sustained injuries in a fatal road accident along the Makurdi-Gboko Highway in Tarka Local Government Area.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred on Monday and involved a Toyota bus and a Sharon bus that collided in a head-on crash.
Reacting to the development, the Security Secretary of Tarka LGA, Bem Agbuku, disclosed that the crash took place shortly after the Agudo axis, specifically around the Tugh-Tugh Sharp Bend on the Makurdi-Gboko road.
Agbuku praised the Chairman of Tarka LGA, Hon. Raphael Yenge, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and other security operatives for their swift intervention, which ensured that injured victims were promptly evacuated for medical attention.
According to him, the bodies of the deceased were moved to a mortuary, while those who sustained injuries were taken to St. Christopher Clinic in Wannune for treatment.
Confirming the incident on Tuesday, the Benue State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Kehinde Dahunsi, revealed that a male child was among those who lost their lives. He added that other victims were rushed to hospital for care.
The FRSC boss blamed the crash on excessive speeding.
“The accident actually happened yesterday Monday. From available information from my unit commander, about six people died or killed and these six people comprised of three males, two females and one male child, that makes six, and about twenty-three people were rescued unhurt.
“They are responding to treatment in the hospital now. The major cause of the road traffic crash is over-speeding. The driver was over-speeding and he lost control, thereby running to the opposite, which led to a head-on collision with the coming vehicle.
And our advice to all these drivers is to stop excessive speeding, stop speeding.
They should try to adhere to speed limit,” he said.
