At least 17 people have been reported killed following a violent assault on Mbalom community in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State on Easter Sunday, residents have said.

The attack is the latest in a string of security incidents that have continued to trouble several rural parts of the state, where suspected armed groups frequently target communities.

Eyewitnesses disclosed that the assailants invaded the village, opened fire on residents, and razed multiple houses during the onslaught.

So far, no fewer than 17 corpses have been recovered, while search efforts are ongoing as villagers comb nearby bushes in hopes of finding more victims.

The attack also left extensive destruction in its wake, with numerous homes and valuables burnt, forcing many survivors to flee.

A resident, who requested anonymity, described the situation, saying: “This is heartbreaking. People were caught unawares. Many are still missing.”

Attempts to reach the spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, for official confirmation were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
