‘We Must Live Together’ — Okpokwu LG Chairman agrees to accommodate Fulani herdsmen amid attacks in Benue South
Amid growing concerns among residents over security and relations between host communities and herders in parts of Benue State, the Chairman of Okpokwu Local Government Area, Hon. Adah Mathew Inalegwu, has convened a peace meeting with Fulani leaders and key stakeholders, urging all parties to embrace peaceful coexistence.
The meeting, held on June 16 in Ugbokolo, brought together the Head of the Fulani Community in Benue State, Alhaji Mohammad Adoriske, security agencies, traditional rulers and community leaders to discuss measures aimed at sustaining peace across the local government.
Addressing the gathering, Inalegwu acknowledged the concerns expressed by residents and stressed that his administration would not relent in safeguarding lives and property.
“We must live together in peace. Dialogue, mutual respect and cooperation remain the best path to resolving our differences and preventing conflict,” the chairman said.
He assured members of the Fulani community and host communities alike that the council would continue working closely with security agencies to prevent any incident capable of disrupting the prevailing peace in Okpokwu.
The meeting was attended by the Divisional Police Officer, Supol Okoriko Gabriel; representatives of the Department of State Services (DSS); the Nigerian Army Commander in Okpokwu; the District Head of Edumoga, Chief Ojoh Emmanuel Ochechema; the Ugbokolo Ward Head, Chief Emmanuel Ikom; Councillor representing Ugbokolo Ward, Hon. Clement Elachi; Hon. Ken Oche; and other stakeholders.
In his remarks, the Fulani leader, Alhaji Mohammad Adoriske, reaffirmed the commitment of Fulani residents to peaceful coexistence with their host communities.
He stated that there had been no major conflict between the Fulani community and the people of Aokpe, attributing the peaceful atmosphere to cooperation among community leaders, security agencies and the grace of God.
Adoriske also commended the chairman for his efforts in protecting lives and property, particularly his inclusive approach to governance and commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents, irrespective of ethnic background
