Windstorm kills four, injures many in Sokoto communities

A severe windstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall has killed four people, injured several others, and caused extensive damage to homes and public facilities across communities in Kwara Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The storm, which occurred on Saturday, destroyed several structures, including a primary school and a hospital, leaving many households affected.

Following the incident, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Sokoto Operations Office, carried out an assessment of the affected communities to determine the extent of the damage and identify the immediate needs of victims.

Communities affected by the disaster include Mallamawa, Mai Mushe, Kaura, Sabon Gari, Rungin Tsamiya, and neighbouring settlements, where hundreds of families were impacted and several homes sustained varying levels of destruction.

The assessment was conducted to guide emergency intervention efforts and support the distribution of relief materials to affected residents. Several people were injured, while four deaths were recorded.

NEMA said it would continue to collaborate with relevant state and local authorities to ensure that necessary humanitarian assistance reaches those affected.

“It will continue to work with relevant state and local authorities to ensure appropriate humanitarian assistance reaches the victims as efforts continue to determine the full impact of the disaster,” the agency stated.
