Abia police dismiss three officers for abduction, extortion

The Abia State Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, has dismissed three officers over alleged conspiracy, abduction, and extortion of unsuspecting victims.

In a statement on Friday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, identified the dismissed officers as Jonas Nnamdi, James Daniel, and Ifeanyi Emeka.

Nnamdi, a sergeant, was attached to the Aba Police Area Command, while Daniel and Emeka, both corporals, were assigned to the Department of Operations in Umuahia and Eziama Divisional Police Headquarters, respectively.

The officers were arrested on January 29, found in possession of an electric baton, an assault rifle, and a Beretta pistol. They were apprehended alongside two civilians by a divisional police officer in Abayi.

According to Chinaka, the dismissed officers conspired to hire a minibus, abduct civilians along Port Harcourt Expressway, and extort money from them, even demanding extra payments from their families for release.

Following an investigation and orderly room trial, their involvement in the crime was confirmed, leading to their dismissal from the force.

The police command has retrieved their official accoutrements and handed them, along with their civilian accomplices, to the State Criminal Investigation Department for prosecution.

Commissioner Isa reaffirmed the command’s zero tolerance for corruption and misconduct, assuring the public that bad officers will not be shielded.

He also reiterated the police command’s commitment to upholding professionalism, discipline, and the rule of law, in line with the vision of Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun.
