Several residents of Okung Estate in Ifa Atai Etoi village, Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, were injured during an early morning attack on Monday by a notorious armed robbery gang terrorizing the area.

The gang, consisting of around 15 robbers, launched a house-to-house assault, leaving multiple victims with gunshot and machete wounds. Among those injured was a woman, Mrs. Bassey, who sustained a gunshot wound, and a night guard named Victor, who suffered machete cuts to his head.

The robbers made off with valuables including laptops, cash, mobile phones, and iPads. Dr. Nsima Andy, Chairman of the Landlords Association, confirmed the attack and reported the incident to the Shelter Afrique Police Station.

Andy recounted, “From what we’ve gathered, the robbers had been in the community since midnight. I was informed around 1:30 a.m. by another landlord. By then, they had already raided seven houses, taking cash and valuables. The police have been informed, and an officer has inspected the scene.”

One victim, who requested anonymity for fear of retaliation, described how 15 armed, unmasked men stormed his home at 1:59 a.m., operating for 45 minutes. “They broke in through the window before my wife could open the door. We placed all our money on the table, but when they demanded more and I told them we had none, they shot my wife in the leg. We’re fortunate to be alive.”

Residents voiced frustration over the frequent attacks. Businessman Mr. Desmond Ukpong, whose home was raided on August 13, recounted a similar experience where he and his family were threatened and beaten while robbers looted their valuables. He expressed disappointment at the lack of police response during the incident.

Landlady Mrs. Abigail Ekong raised concerns about the constant gunfire, which she said was affecting both residents and local businesses. She urged the government to enhance security, especially as crime rates tend to rise during the ‘Ember’ months.

Mr. Okon Etim, an automobile engineer with a workshop on Airport Road, said he now closes his shop earlier due to the worsening insecurity in the area.

Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, confirmed that patrols in the area had been increased, with additional officers deployed to known “black spots.” He urged residents to report any suspicious activities to help maintain security in the community.
