Army private arrested for assaulting food vendor over ₦2,000 Debt in Benue

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrest of one of its personnel, Private Christopher Emmanuel, for allegedly assaulting a female food vendor, identified as Doshima, in Kula, Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State, following a dispute over a ₦2,000 debt.
The incident occurred on May 6, 2025, and was formally reported two days later, on May 8. According to preliminary investigations, the altercation began when the vendor confronted Emmanuel about the unpaid amount. The situation reportedly escalated after the soldier accused her of insulting him during a phone conversation, which allegedly triggered the physical assault.
In a statement released by the Headquarters of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), the Army described the incident as “unfortunate” and confirmed that Private Emmanuel is currently in custody.
“Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the altercation,” said Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Abdullahi Lawal Osabo, in a statement issued Saturday.
“The Nigerian Army has zero tolerance for human rights violations and indiscipline among its personnel. We assure the general public and the victim that justice will be served.”
The Army also urged members of the public to report any misconduct involving military personnel through the designated Human Rights Desk helpline, rather than posting on social media.
