ASUU strike: NANS declares ‘war’ on lecturers, FG

NANS has released a protest timetable over ASUU Strike and marked Abuja for a total shutdown.

IDOMA VOICE reports that the National Association of Nigerian Students has rolled out a new timetable for its nationwide protests.

This was made known in a circular signed by the union president, Usman Umar Barambu and dated Monday, September 19, 2022.

In the circular, Barambu directed all zonal coordinators and students’ unions of various schools to mobilise their members for the massive action.

The statement reads: “I convey to you solidarity greetings from the leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the Apex/umbrella body of all students both at home and in Diaspora which is also the largest students youths advocacy platform in Africa with over 22 million Nigerian students voting population cut-across our campuses.

“You will agree with me that on the 14th day of February 2022, the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) embarked on an indefinite warning strike which has led to various phases of striking activities for the past seven (7) months, due to ASUU and FG’s inability to resolve their issues, Hence, after proper consultation I am directing all Zonal, JCC and SUG structures to align with the following schedule of event below:

1. Monday Zone D 19th-20th September, 2022

2.Thursday Zone E 22nd-23rd September, 2022

3. Monday Zone B 26th-27th September, 2022

4. Thursday Zone A 29th-30th September, 2022

5.Wednesday Zone F 5th-6th October, 2022

6.Monday Zone C 10th-11th October, 2022

7.National shutdown Abuja to be communicated….after Zone C. May I use this medium to commend Nigerian students for standing firm in solidarity.

“I am glad to inform you that we will remain resolute in making sure our demands are adhere (sic) to and in other (sic) for adequate co-ordination, I have directed the following national officers to oversee the peaceful conduct of the protest in the following respective zone in conjunction with the zonal and state structures as follows

1. Zone D…………..Comr. Attah Felix Senate President

2.Zone E… Comr. Victor Ezenagu VP National

3. Zone B. Comr. Usman Baba Kankia. Secretary General

4. Zone A. Comr. Babatunde Akinteye Afeez. VP External

5. Zone F.. Comr.Sariki Sulieman. VP Special Duties

6. Zone C…. Comr. Vanesa Egbeahie. VP Intercampus.”

“1 Comr. Usman Umar Barambu the President of NANS will co-ordinate the National Shut down,” the circular added.

SaharaReporters reported on Monday that NANS’ South-West zone blocked the road leading to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, protesting against the ongoing strike.

The students who were blocked by security operatives from gaining access to the airport took over the road, preventing traffic flow and causing gridlock.

The protesters were led by NANS National Taskforce Chairman, Olumide Ojo; Vice President, External Affairs, Akinteye Babatunde; Public Relations Officer, Giwa Yisa Temitope; Zone D Coordinator, Adegboye Emmanuel Olatunji; Deputy Senate President, Ekundina Elvis; Ondo JCC Chairman, Omotosho Surprise; Lagos JCC Chairman, Olusesi Tolulope Samson; Ogun JCC Chairman, Kehinde Damilola Simeon and Oyo JCC Chairman, Adeleke Quadri Abidemi.
