A group of bandits carried out a deadly assault on a mosque in the Sabon Layi area of Kakangi ward, within the Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Tragically, the Imam lost his life in the attack, and one worshipper named Kabir was also killed. Two others sustained injuries of varying degrees.

The two injured individuals, Bilya Mairabo and Ashiru Mairabo, are currently receiving medical treatment at the Jibrin Maigwari General Hospital in Birnin-Gwari.

A community leader, Zubair AbduRrauf, who holds the title of Danmasanin of Birnin-Gwari, revealed that the incident occurred during the early morning prayers around 5 am. He expressed concerns over the frequent bandit attacks in the Birnin-Gwari region, where residents, especially farmers, face the constant threat of violence.

AbduRrauf emphasized that the situation is particularly perilous along the Birnin-Gwari-Kaduna highway, causing distress for travelers and other road users.

He stated, “Yes, an Imam of a mosque and two other worshippers were killed. It occurred around 5 am on Tuesday. Two other worshippers are at the Jibrin Maigwari General Hospital, Birnin-Gwari.”

These areas near the Kamuku National Park and the Kuyebana Forest in Zamfara and Niger states have witnessed a surge in bandit activity.

AbduRrauf pointed out the urgent need for a change in security strategy to address the ongoing bandit attacks, despite the efforts of security personnel.

As of the time of this report, there has been no official confirmation from either the state government or the state police command. The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansir Hassan, promised to provide further information once he was available.
