Benue Governor’s Cup kicks off December 1
Benue State Commissioner for Youths, Sports, and Creativity, Tiza Imojime, has announced that the 2025 Benue Governor’s Cup is set to commence on December 1.
Imojime made the announcement on Tuesday in Makurdi while receiving the leadership of the Benue Football Association (BFA), led by its chairman, Paul Edeh.
The commissioner revealed that a preliminary committee has been set up to ensure that this year’s edition becomes the best in the state’s history.
“We can have them compete at the local government level from December 1 to 10. Then we take a break for team selection.
“From December 11 to 20, because of the closeness to Christmas, we will host the main tournament.
“The Super 10 will play from January 4 to 6, 2026, before we have the finals, subject to the approval of the governor and the State Executive Committee,” he said.
Imojime added that this year’s edition would blend local competition with international standards.
“We’re going to have the Governor’s Cup this year looking like a local tournament with international characteristics. Not just Nigeria, not just Benue, not just Africa—we are going to make sure the world knows that the Benue Governor’s Cup is being played this time,” he said.
BFA chairman Paul Edeh noted that, for the first time, the competition would feature both male and female participants.
He highlighted that there would be no segregation in the male and female competitions, with prizes, trophies, and jerseys all equal.
Edeh also sought the commissioner’s approval for the association to proceed with preparations for the tournament.
