Benue govt launches solar taxis, targets 8,500 jobs by December
The Benue State Government officially launched a fleet of solar-powered electric vehicles on Monday, marking a major step forward in the state’s commitment to affordable, eco-friendly transportation and job creation.
In partnership with Esse Mobility, the state has introduced commercial solar taxis, according to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The pilot phase kicks off in Makurdi, the state capital, with plans for expansion to other cities, including Otukpo and Vandeikya, in the coming months.
At the launch event, Mr. Okey Esse, Founder of Esse Mobility Technical Partners, described the initiative as a significant achievement in Nigeria’s clean energy transition. He explained that the vehicles are powered entirely by solar energy, with batteries charged by the sun, ensuring efficient operation in urban areas like Makurdi. The taxis also come equipped with advanced security features that allow real-time monitoring of passenger journeys, ensuring both safety and accountability.
“Each of these cars is packed with security technology, so every trip is monitored,” Mr. Esse stated. “By December, our goal is to have 500 units on the road. We plan to expand to Otukpo, Vandeikya, and other local government areas.”
He emphasized the project’s potential for job creation, noting that the initiative will establish local assembly plants, generate direct employment, and create additional jobs in areas like charging stations, administration, and operations.
“These cars will allow people to travel even during rainy weather, and we expect to create a minimum of 8,500 jobs in the state by December,” he added.
