Benue killings: Anti-open grazing law remains in force – Alia insists

The Benue State Government has reiterated that the anti-open grazing law remains fully enforced in the state.

This law, which prohibits open grazing within Benue, was enacted during the administration of former Governor Samuel Ortom.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Tersoo Kula, affirmed this stance while responding to a purported letter of appreciation from the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria.

Kula emphasized that grazing activities must now be conducted solely within ranches across Benue State. He issued a stern warning that any form of attacks on farming communities by armed herders must cease immediately.

The Government of Benue State has firmly stated that there are no plans to reconsider this law. Therefore, any attempts by proponents or authors of such publications to request a review from the government at this time would be deemed diversionary and against the law.

Kula clarified that if there were to be a review of the ban on open grazing, it would not be influenced by groups using intimidation tactics or engaging in unlawful publications.

He pointed out that the group responsible for unleashing criminal gangs upon the people of Benue has yet to show any remorse. In issuing their recent statement, Miyetti Allah appears to be insensitive to the tragic loss of life in numerous communities.

Governor Hyacinth Alia, Kula added, commends the efforts and determination of security agencies in restoring peace and normalcy to affected areas.

He called upon all citizens to stand behind the full implementation of the law against open grazing, emphasizing the importance of supporting peace and security in the state.
