Benue: PDP accuses Alia of playing blame game amid rising insecurity

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has accused Governor Hyacinth Alia of engaging in political blame games instead of taking decisive action to address the ongoing security crisis in the state.

The accusation follows Governor Alia’s recent interview on Channels Television, during which he alleged that certain politicians based in Abuja and members of the National Assembly were behind the wave of killings in the state, claiming they were harbouring and aiding those responsible for the violence.

In a swift response, the Benue PDP, through a statement signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Tim Nyor, described the governor’s remarks as “irresponsible and dangerously diversionary,” arguing that the comments reflect a pattern of political escapism rather than genuine governance.

“Governor Alia’s tendency to deflect blame onto Abuja politicians instead of tackling insecurity with clear and actionable policies is unacceptable,” the statement read. “It’s a dangerous distraction from the real work of governance and accountability.”

The opposition party noted that previous administrations in the state directly acknowledged the threats posed by armed herdsmen without engaging in “reckless blame-shifting.”

The PDP emphasized that Benue’s security crisis should not be politicized, urging the governor to submit credible security reports to the relevant federal agencies rather than making public accusations without substantiation.

“While the governor enjoys constitutional immunity, those he accuses do not,” the PDP warned. “If he truly believes his claims, he should provide the necessary intelligence to the appropriate authorities for action.”

Drawing comparisons, the party pointed out that neighboring states such as Plateau and Taraba are facing similar threats but have taken more measured and responsible approaches to security.

“Are the attacks in Plateau, Taraba, or Enugu also being orchestrated by Abuja politicians?” the PDP queried. “Or is Benue being turned into a battleground for political witch-hunting?”

The party further recalled that violent herdsmen attacks in Benue predate the Alia administration, and were a major concern under previous governors, including Samuel Ortom and Gabriel Suswam.

“Rather than building on the efforts of his predecessors, Governor Alia’s rhetoric is full of propaganda, distractions, and unverified accusations,” the statement added.

The PDP urged the governor to abandon divisive politics and instead embrace inclusive, proactive, and strategic measures to secure the state.

“True leadership at a time like this requires honesty, responsibility, and a unifying spirit. These are not just political values—they’re also moral imperatives, especially for a Reverend leading a state in crisis.”
