Court denies Nnamdi Kanu bail
On Monday, the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed an application filed by Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), seeking to set aside the 2017 order that revoked his bail due to alleged abscondment from trial.
In her ruling, Justice Binta Nyako also rejected Kanu’s request to be transferred to Kuje Custodial Centre if his application to vacate the bail revocation order was denied.
Justice Nyako reiterated that the court had repeatedly addressed Kanu’s bail pleas and that the only recourse available to him now was to appeal the ruling. She emphasized that any further applications on this matter would be considered an abuse of the court process.
“I have found and held that the present place of the applicant’s detention is proper,” said Justice Nyako. “Any further application will be regarded as an abuse of court process.”
The judge then ordered Kanu to proceed to trial, with the court adjourning the case until June 19 and June 20 for trial commencement.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Nyako had previously set today’s date to rule on Kanu’s application to either vacate the bail revocation, be placed under house arrest, or be transferred to Kuje Custodial Centre.
