BREAKING: DSS shuns court order, re-arrests Emefiele
The Department of State Services (DSS) has disregarded a court order and returned the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, to custody. The incident occurred at the Federal High Court in Lagos.
Earlier, the court had granted bail to Emefiele after he pleaded not guilty to two counts of alleged illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. Justice Nicholas Oweibo, who presided over the case, had ordered that Emefiele remain in prison until he fulfills his bail conditions.
However, chaos erupted as officials from the DSS and the Nigerian Correctional Services engaged in a physical altercation over the responsibility of moving Emefiele from the court premises. The dispute intensified as both parties insisted on their jurisdiction.
After a tense few minutes, officials from the DSS finally managed to take custody of the suspended CBN governor, defying the court’s order for him to be released on bail.
The situation has raised concerns about the rule of law and the proper enforcement of court decisions. Many are now closely watching how this standoff will be resolved and what consequences it may have on the ongoing legal proceedings involving Godwin Emefiele.
