Former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, appeared before the Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to charges of illegal possession of firearms brought against him by the Ministry of Justice.

Emefiele faced a two-count charge related to unlicensed possession of firearms. In the first count, he was accused of having a single-barrel shotgun (JOJEFF MAGNUM 8371) without a valid license, which is in violation of Section 4 of the Firearms Act, and punishable under Section 27 (1b) of the same Act.

The second count alleged that the suspended CBN governor had in his possession 123 rounds of live ammunition (cartridges) without a license, contrary to Section 8 of the Firearms Act, and punishable under Section 27 (1)(b)(il) of the same Act.

The charges against Emefiele come after his arrest on June 10, which coincided with his suspension from the position of CBN governor by President Bola Tinubu.

The court proceedings are ongoing, and further developments in the case will be closely monitored.
