BREAKING: President Talon safe as Government forces takes control following failed coup attempt
Benin’s President Patrice Talon is reportedly safe after a brief coup scare, with loyal security forces swiftly moving to restore order, the presidency confirmed on Sunday.
In a statement, officials characterized the attempted takeover as the work of a small, fringe faction with minimal reach.
“This was a limited group that only managed to seize control of the national television station. The regular armed forces are regaining authority, and both the capital and the country at large remain secure,” the statement read.
Earlier, a group of soldiers calling themselves the “Military Committee for Refoundation” announced on television that President Talon had been ousted.
The government has since dismissed the claim, describing it as an isolated incident and assuring the public that normalcy is being restored.
