BREAKING: Reps bans pornographic websites in Nigeria

The House of Representatives has mandated the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to instruct internet service providers to block all websites hosting obscene and pornographic content with immediate effect.

The resolution was adopted on Tuesday following a motion sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker from Katsina State.

While presenting the motion, Tafoki emphasized that cyber pornography had become a global concern and that Nigeria had yet to take sufficient measures to curb its spread. He described Nigeria as a “highly religious country” where major faiths condemn nudity and obscenity.

The lawmaker highlighted that several countries across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East had enacted laws prohibiting pornography. He also referenced warnings from psychologists and sociologists regarding the adverse effects of pornography, including its potential to encourage adultery, prostitution, and addiction.

“Renowned psychologists and sociologists have issued stern warnings on the psychological, sociological, and mental consequences of viewing pornographic content,” Tafoki stated.

When Speaker Tajudeen Abbas subjected the motion to a voice vote, the lawmakers overwhelmingly supported it.

As a result, the House directed the NCC to impose penalties on service providers that fail to comply with the directive.
