BREAKING: Six reportedly shot death as protest turns bloody in Suleja
Six protesters have been reported dead, with many others injured in the ongoing hardship protest in Suleja, Niger State.
The fatalities occurred as security forces attempted to remove a group of protesters who had barricaded a section of the Abuja-Kaduna highway, causing significant delays for motorists.
The situation worsened when a reinforcement team arrived to restore order, leading to further unrest. Yahaya Nda Isah, a resident of Hassan Dalatu Road, was struck by a stray bullet while riding his bike near the Suleja Police ‘A’ Division, where protesters had gathered. His nephew, speaking with Daily Trust, described the tragic incident, stating that Isah was simply passing by and was not involved in the protest when he was fatally hit.
Another victim, Mallam Abu, was killed on the spot, with three others also shot at the same location. Additionally, two other individuals were shot at the Suleja Junction on the Abuja-Kaduna road.
Niger State Police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, reported that some individuals attempted to set the Tafa LGA on fire but were dispersed by police and military forces. He confirmed that the Kaduna road and toll gate have been cleared.
