Chelsea, a club competing in the English Premier League, have reached an agreement worth £14 million for the acquisition of Djordje Petrovic, the goalkeeper of New England Revolution.

The transfer arrangement entails an initial payment of £12.5 million, coupled with an additional £1.5 million contingent on performance-related factors.

Aged 23 and hailing from Serbia, Petrovic, an international player, is poised to undergo a medical assessment in the forthcoming days. His arrival is anticipated to introduce healthy competition for the newly-appointed primary goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez.

During the current summer transfer period, Chelsea secured the services of Sanchez from Brighton. However, with three goalkeepers currently out on loan—Kepa Arrizabalaga at Real Madrid, Teddy Sharman-Lowe at Bromley, and Gaga Slonina at K.A.S. Eupen—there is a necessity for a new goalkeeper in the West London squad.

In the event that the agreement materializes, Petrovic will mark the second goalkeeper to join Chelsea this year from the Major League Soccer (MLS), following Gabriel Slonina’s transfer to the Chicago Fire on New Year’s Day.

Petrovic, who partook in 21 league matches in the previous season for New England Revolution, attained the runner-up position for the 2022 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year accolade.
