Chelsea continue remarkable early-goal trend after Arsenal defeat

Chelsea may have suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season, but one striking pattern has remained unchanged after Matchweek 3: the Blues have scored the earliest goal in each of their three league matches this campaign.

The latest came on Sunday at the Emirates Stadium, where Morgan Rogers stunned Arsenal by putting Chelsea ahead after just 77 seconds. The England forward reacted quickest after a set-piece situation broke down in the Arsenal box, firing a first-time effort beyond David Raya.

Although Arsenal eventually recovered to win 2-1 through goals from Kai Havertz and Martin Ødegaard, Chelsea once again showed their ability to start matches at high intensity.

The pattern had already emerged in Chelsea’s opening two fixtures under new manager Xabi Alonso.

On Matchweek 1, João Pedro needed only 31 seconds to give Chelsea the lead against Fulham at Craven Cottage. His effort, assisted by Cole Palmer, was subsequently described as the fastest goal of the opening round in Premier League history. Chelsea went on to win the entertaining encounter 3-2.

A week later, the Blues again struck first and early against Brighton at Stamford Bridge. Romeo Lavia opened the scoring in the fourth minute, before Pedro Neto and João Pedro added further goals as Chelsea raced into a 3-0 lead inside 32 minutes. Chelsea eventually survived a Brighton comeback to win 4-3.

The sequence means Chelsea have opened all three of their Premier League matches with the first goal, doing so within the opening four minutes every time.

Their timings are particularly notable: 31 seconds against Fulham, four minutes against Brighton and 77 seconds against Arsenal. The latest goal also means Chelsea have now scored inside the first two minutes in two of their three league fixtures.

Despite the attacking promise, Alonso will be concerned that Chelsea have been unable to turn those quick starts into defensive control. The Blues have scored eight goals across their first three league matches but have also conceded seven, leaving them with two wins and one defeat.

Chelsea currently sit fourth on six points and will look to return to winning ways when they host Hull City in Matchweek 4 on September 12.
