Chelsea close to appointing Christoph Freund as sporting director

Christoph Freund has reportedly agreed to leave Red Bull Salzburg and join Chelsea, as their next Sporting Director.

The 45-year-old and Chelsea had already spoken, as previously and this weekend, the negotiations advanced further, with sources now confirming that a deal has been effectively agreed to.

Due to Chelsea not playing in the English Premier League this weekend, the management had time to focus on reaching an agreement with Freund. Graham Potter, the new head coach, also needed to approve the appointment of the Austrian.

Co-owner Todd Boehly chose Freund for the position after the team was unable to persuade Michael Edwards, a former player for Liverpool, to accept. Chelsea also discussed the position with people like Paul Mitchell and Luis Campos. Boehly, though, offered Freund the position, and he accepted after receiving approval from Red Bull Salzburg to discuss terms with Chelsea.

Freund renewed his long-term contract with Salzburg earlier this year, but they have not attempted to keep him there because they know the chance to join Stamford Bridge is a big one. Freund’s appointment is anticipated to be confirmed early next week, as Chelsea is currently set to finalise arrangements with Salzburg and Freund.
