Condom prices skyrocket in Zimbabwe after US cuts HIV funding

Published

on

Zimbabwe is facing a growing public health crisis as condom prices reach record highs, exacerbating the country’s struggles with HIV prevention.

A recent survey by iHarare reveals that the cheapest condom brand, Protector Plus, now costs nearly $1.50 per packet, while other brands, such as Fantasy and Carex, are priced at $3.20 and $3.30, respectively.

This sharp increase in condom prices follows the suspension of USAID funding, which was heavily reliant on former US President Donald Trump’s executive order on foreign aid. USAID has historically supported the procurement and distribution of 98% of all condoms in Zimbabwe, both for sale and free distribution. The funding halt has significantly impacted the availability of locally sourced condom brands like PSH’s Protector Plus, which are sold at cost recovery prices in local shops.

The surge in prices is stark compared to 2023, when two packets of Protector Plus were available for just $1. Prices have since jumped by 150%, making condoms unaffordable for many Zimbabweans. Despite calls from Population Solutions for Health (PSH) to remove VAT and import duties on condoms, the government has yet to respond.

With one of the highest HIV prevalence rates globally, the price increase threatens to worsen the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the country.
