Do-or-die in Uyo: Super Eagles risk missing 2026 World Cup without win over Benin

Published

on

The Super Eagles are set for a crucial final showdown against the Benin Republic on Tuesday in Uyo as the battle for qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup reaches its climax.

Nigeria must secure victory, and hope other results go their way, to keep their World Cup dream alive.

The team reignited their qualification hopes on Friday after grinding out a 2–1 win over Lesotho, a result that keeps them within touching distance of the group leaders heading into the last round of matches.

Match Recap

Captain William Troost-Ekong gave Nigeria the lead from the penalty spot in the 55th minute after a Lesotho defender handled the ball inside the area. Akor Adams doubled the advantage in the 80th minute with a composed finish, before Kalake pulled one back for Lesotho just three minutes later.

Elsewhere, Benin Republic edged Rwanda 1–0, while South Africa were held to a goalless draw by Zimbabwe. The results leave Nigeria third in Group C with 14 points, trailing Benin (17 points) and South Africa (15 points).

How Nigeria Can Still Qualify

With just one match remaining, Nigeria’s destiny is not entirely in their own hands, but qualification remains mathematically possible through two scenarios:

Defeat Benin Republic: A win in Uyo is absolutely essential to keep Nigeria’s hopes alive.

Rely on other results: The Super Eagles also need South Africa to drop points in their final game. A draw between South Africa and Rwanda would particularly benefit Nigeria, especially if they defeat Benin Republic by a two-goal margin or more.

Opponents to Watch

While Nigeria host Benin Republic in Uyo, South Africa will take on Rwanda at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, a fixture that could ultimately determine the group’s fate. Meanwhile, Lesotho and Zimbabwe, already eliminated, will face off in a match with no impact on qualification.
