Contraband goods valued at over one billion naira seized by Customs

The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘D’, has successfully apprehended illicit goods worth a staggering sum of N1.17 billion between January 30 and August 9, 2023.

During a press conference held in Bauchi on Wednesday, Joseph Adelaja, the Acting Controller of the FOU, shared this remarkable achievement. Adelaja revealed that a total of 88 seizures were made during this time frame, with some notable items including 174,585 liters of petroleum products and nine sacks containing pangolin scales and claws, collectively weighing 396.4 kilograms.

Further elaborating on their efforts, Adelaja detailed the confiscation of 1,800 bags of sugar, each weighing 50 kilograms, as well as 343 bags of fertilizer and 328 bags of foreign rice weighing 50 kilograms each.

Notably, the unit’s vigilant operations also led to the interception of two African crowned cranes, an antelope, a piece of lion bone, and a plastic container filled with lion fat.

Adelaja went on to highlight additional seizures made by the operatives, which encompassed 88 cartons of insecticides, 342 packs of imported candies, 190 cartons of flavored powdered beverages, 23 sacks of pre-owned footwear, and yet another batch of 1,800 bags of sugar, each weighing 50 kilograms.
