Cooking gas, petrol prices drop across Nigeria
Prices of cooking gas and petrol declined on a year-on-year basis in December 2025, offering slight relief to Nigerian households grappling with energy costs, according to separate reports from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
Data released by the bureau indicate that the average prices of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) used for cooking, as well as Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, were lower in December 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. The report also showed marginal decreases on a month-on-month basis.
While the general movement pointed downward across most states and geopolitical zones, the NBS noted that significant price differences still exist depending on location.
5kg Cooking Gas Price Falls by 25%
The report revealed that the average cost of refilling a 5kg LPG cylinder dropped by 1.20 percent month-on-month, sliding from N5,425.78 in November 2025 to N5,360.43 in December 2025.
Compared with December 2024, the decline was more pronounced, representing a 25.31 percent reduction from N7,177.27.
Confirming the figures, the NBS stated, “The average retail price for refilling a 5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) decreased by 1.20 per cent on a month-on-month basis,” adding that the year-on-year decline stood at 25.31 per cent.”
At the state level, Kaduna recorded the highest average refill price for a 5kg cylinder at N5,838.66. Jigawa followed at N5,825.09, while Osun ranked third at N5,777.80. Katsina emerged as the cheapest state, with an average price of N4,855.80.
The average cost of refilling a 12.5kg LPG cylinder also declined slightly. Prices fell by 0.74 percent month-on-month, from N13,538.79 in November 2025 to N13,438.90 in December 2025.
On a year-on-year basis, the price dropped by 22.20 percent, down from N17,274.16 in December 2024.
According to the bureau, Abia recorded the highest average price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder at N14,489.96, followed by Osun at N14,444.50 and Delta at N14,393.17.
Petrol Price Declines to N1,048
Petrol prices also recorded a noticeable drop during the period under review. The NBS reported that the average retail price of PMS stood at N1,048.63 in December 2025, reflecting an 11.81 percent decrease from N1,189.12 recorded in December 2024.
The bureau stated, “The average retail price paid by consumers for Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) for December 2025 was ₦1,048.63.”
On a month-on-month basis, the average price declined by 1.20 percent from N1,061.35 in November 2025.
State-level data showed that Kogi recorded the highest average petrol price at N1,104.45, while Oyo had the lowest at N996.55.
By region, the North East remained the most expensive zone for petrol purchases, while the South West recorded the lowest average prices nationwide.
