Court stops impeachment of Ondo deputy governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa
The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order restraining the Ondo State House of Assembly from impeaching Deputy Governor Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, based on allegations of gross misconduct. Justice Emeka Nwite delivered the ruling following an ex-parte motion presented by Aiyedatiwa’s counsel, Kayode Adewusi.
The judge not only prevented the impeachment but also barred Governor Rotimi Akeredolu from nominating a new deputy governor and submitting the nomination to the lawmakers for approval until the substantive matter is heard and determined.
Justice Nwite emphasized that granting the application would serve the interest of justice, and consequently, the application was successful.
Mr. Aiyedatiwa had previously filed a motion on notice against several parties, including the Inspector-General of Police and the Department of State Services. The application sought four specific reliefs. The court granted all the reliefs and also issued an interim injunction restraining Governor Akeredolu from obstructing or intimidating Aiyedatiwa in the execution of his duties as the deputy governor of Ondo State.
The matter has been adjourned until October 9, 2023, for a full hearing. Additionally, Aiyedatiwa filed another suit in Akure seeking to halt the state House of Assembly’s impeachment proceedings against him until the court determines the suit filed earlier.
