Court stops police from enforcing tinted glass permit policy
A Federal High Court sitting in Warri, Delta State, has ordered the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to maintain the status quo in the enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy.
The order followed a suit filed by lawyer John Aikpokpo-Martins challenging the legality of the policy.
The police had revived the tinted permit system through its digital platform, POSSAP, citing security concerns and complaints of harassment by motorists with factory-fitted tints. Enforcement began in June 2025 after a 30-day grace period, which was later extended to October.
Force spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, defended the policy, citing provisions of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 2004, which empower the IGP or his delegate to issue permits on health or security grounds.
He added that the regulation was aimed at preventing crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, terrorism, and “one chance” operations.
