Dispatch rider uses boss’ motorcycle as loan collateral for christmas, convicted for theft

A 24-year-old dispatch rider, Alex Williams, has admitted to using his employer’s delivery motorcycle as collateral to secure a loan for Christmas celebrations.
Williams, who resides in Dutse Alhaji, Abuja, pleaded guilty to theft before a Magistrates’ Court in Kubwa.
“I asked my boss, Mrs. Marthamabis Ezekiel, for money for Christmas, but she refused. So I used her delivery bike as collateral to borrow money,” he told the court, pleading for leniency.
Prosecution counsel, John Okpa, urged the court to order Williams to compensate Ezekiel, citing Section 319 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).
Magistrate Nneaka Lesley convicted Williams and ordered his remand at Kuje Correctional Facility, postponing sentencing until February 4.
According to Okpa, Ezekiel reported the case to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Dawaki on January 12, stating that Williams, whom she hired to operate her Jinora Logistics bike, went missing with the motorcycle on December 4. Investigations revealed that he had sold the bike without her consent and later claimed to have had an accident while demanding ₦50,000 from her.
The offense contravenes Section 288 of the Penal Code.
