ECOWAS Chiefs of Defence Staff convene in Abuja to address Niger Republic coup
High-ranking military officials from several West African countries have gathered in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, to discuss the political situation in Niger Republic. The meeting, organized in response to the recent coup in the region, is closely tied to the military’s threat of intervention by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Leading the gathering is Gen. Christopher Musa, the chairman of the ECOWAS military chiefs.
Prominent military chiefs from Togo, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Senegal, Liberia, Guinea, Gambia, Cote’Divoire, Cabo Verde, and the Republic of Benin have already arrived in Nigeria for the meeting.
During an emergency meeting in Abuja, ECOWAS leaders made it clear that they are prepared to use decisive force, if necessary, to remove the military junta that seized power in Niger Republic last Thursday. The leaders are demanding the reinstatement of Muhammad Bazoum, the ousted president, to his rightful position.
