The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained 59 individuals suspected of internet fraud in Abuja.

According to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the arrests were made on Abacha Road in the Mararaba area of Nasarawa State on Monday, following credible intelligence linking the suspects to online scams.

During the operation, EFCC operatives seized 73 mobile phones of various brands. Oyewale confirmed that the arrested individuals would face court proceedings once investigations are completed.

In recent years, the EFCC has ramped up its crackdown on cybercrime, resulting in numerous arrests of suspected fraudsters in urban centers across Nigeria. The commission has repeatedly warned young Nigerians against engaging in internet fraud—locally known as “Yahoo Yahoo”—citing its damaging effects on the nation’s economy and reputation.

In tandem with these efforts, the Nigerian government has introduced stricter cybercrime laws and is collaborating with international agencies to dismantle online fraud networks. The EFCC continues to urge the public to report any suspicious financial activities as part of its broader strategy to combat internet-related crimes.
