Efeyi Ugboju attack: Bandits will pay for killing Benue residents — Alia vows

Governor Hyacinth Alia has vowed that those behind the deadly attack on the Efeyi community in Ugboju District of Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State will face justice, declaring that the bandits “will pay” for killing innocent residents.

The governor made the vow on Tuesday while reacting to the early morning attack by suspected armed herders, which left scores of people dead and many others injured.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, Alia expressed deep sadness over the incident and assured residents that his administration would continue to support security agencies to ensure those responsible are apprehended.

“The bandits must pay for their crime against the peaceful people of Benue State,” the governor said.

Alia commended the Benue State Police Command for its swift response to the attack, which led to the neutralisation of two suspected armed bandits believed to have participated in the assault.

According to the statement, police operatives tracked the fleeing attackers after receiving reports of the incident. A gun battle ensued, during which two of the suspects, said to have stayed behind to provide cover for others escaping, were killed.

The governor praised the Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, and officers of the command for their prompt action, describing it as a demonstration of the state’s commitment to confronting insecurity.

He reiterated that his administration would continue to provide the necessary support to security agencies to rid the state of criminal elements.

“Benue land is for Benue people. Those who think they can come and push the people away and take over should think twice.

“Our people are peaceful and hardworking. I was elected to protect them, and I must do everything legitimately possible to ensure my people are protected and our land is secured,” Alia said.

The latest attack is one of several deadly incidents linked to suspected armed herders in parts of Benue State, particularly in communities across the state’s southern axis. Security agencies are continuing efforts to track down the fleeing attackers.
